On April 24, 2014 the International Conference "Industrial Designs: Past, Present and Future", devoted to the 150th anniversary of the first Russian design law, was held at Rospatent as a part of events dedicated to the celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day.
The event was organized by the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM).
179 specialists in the field of intellectual property took part in the Conference, including representatives from international organizations (WIPO, OHIM, Eurasian Economic Commission); foreign patent offices (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Moldova, Republic of Korea, Romania, Montenegro, South Africa, Japan); foreign diplomatic and trade missions in Russia (Algeria, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland); representatives from business and academia. Videoconferencing with St. Petersburg was provided during proceedings of the Conference.

The event was opened by welcome addresses of Mr. Boris Simonov, Director General of Rospatent, Ms. Binying Wang, Deputy Director General of WIPO, Mr. Sergey Katyrin, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation and Mr. Lee Joon-Seok, Deputy Commissioner of KIPO. The Vice President of ANO “Sochi-2014” Organizing Committee" Mr. Alexey Krasnov provided information on the strategy for the use and protection of the brand of 2014 Games.

The first panel of the Conference was dedicated to the work of WIPO on the Draft Design Law Treaty aimed at harmonization of the procedural formalities of registration of this object of intellectual property in various countries. Speakers and participants of the Conference highly appreciated the work conducted by WIPO and its Member States and noted the timeliness and need for the soonest convening of a Diplomatic Conference for the adoption of this most important multilateral agreement.

Special attention within the second panel was paid to the economic importance of industrial designs and their use for business purposes, as well as to the legislative regulation at the national level. Speakers from OHIM, Russia, South Africa and Morocco have shared their experience and information in this field.

The third panel was devoted to the features of international and regional registration – the Hague system for international registration of industrial designs and the system of Community Design within the EU.
